Several Wegmans Private Label Pet Food Items Recalled on Possible Salmonella
Wegmans Food Markets yesterday alerted shoppers to a recall of several varieties of Wegmans Bruiser (dry) Dog Food, and all varieties of Wegmans Buju and Ziggie (dry) Cat Food.
The alert reached shoppers via a mass e-mail from s.v.p. of consumer affairs Mary Ellen Burris. According to Burris, the affected products were part of a recall by the manufacturer, Franklin, Tenn.-based Mars Petcare US, which also included other national and store brand pet foods, among them four Pedigree dog food products.
The items were recalled because of potential contamination with salmonella serotype Schwarzengrund. The recall only covers the United States. The products were produced at Mars' Everson, Pa. facility between Feb. 18 and July 29.
Not affected by the recall are Bruiser Healthy Mix Variety, Kibble Variety, and Lean Kibble Variety, as well as treats and canned dog food, Wegmans said. Burris explained that those products were made at a different plant.
Burris noted in her e-mail that Wegmans placed automated calls to its customers who used their Shoppers Club Card when buying the recalled products, but decided to send the message more broadly as well, "because some customers may not have used their card, and because we may not have updated phone numbers for everyone."
She urged customers to update their Shoppers Club contact information on the Wegmans Web site, so that they could receive future recall notices, as well as other information.
