Stop & Shop Named Apple Merchandiser of the Year

Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. has received the 2008 Apple Merchandiser of the Year award from the National Apple Month program. Nominated by apple industry members, the Ahold USA banner was tapped for the honor for its level of merchandising support and promotional efforts in regard to apples and apple products throughout the year.

According to National Apple Month, Stop & Shop "offers their consumer excellent produce displays that are attractive and informative." Also noted were the grocer's wide selection of finest-quality apples, outstanding merchandising of apples on refrigerated displays, and support of merchandising programs, vendor coupons, and cross-merchandising opportunities.

On hand to accept the award were Stop & Shop v.p. of produce sales Domenic D'Antuono, apple buyer Raquel Jordan, and apple merchandiser Stephen Santos. Representing the apple industry at the August presentation were Mike Accetturo of Rainier Fruit Co., Chuck Andola and Dean Decker of United Apple Sales, and National Apple Month director Kay Rentzel.

The Dillsburg, Pa.-based organization presented the $1,000 charity award to the Stop & Shop Family Foundation.

Quincy, Mass.-based Stop & Shop operates over 360 stores in the New England region, New York, and New Jersey.
