Tesco Stores Ltd Pilots new Bi-optic Scanner/Scale Solution

LONDON, United Kingdom -- In an effort to boost productivity at its checkouts, Tesco is piloting a new bi-optic, in-counter scanner/scale solution in 400 lanes.

If the pilot is successful, the retailer plans to purchase an additional 2000 units during its current fiscal year, through February 2006, according to Metrologic, a Blackwood, N.J.-based manufacturer and marketer of bar code scanning and high-speed automated data capture systems solutions using laser, holographic and vision-based technologies. The unit being piloted is Metrologic's Stratos bi-optic scanner scale, which provides 360 degree scanning capability, allowing the operator to simply pass the product across the scanner in one smooth movement from one hand to another.

"Stratos' unique advantages of built-in resilience and ease of maintenance, combined with the productivity benefits for the operator, deliver the benefits that the [Tesco] Simpler Checkout was designed to produce," said Neil Finch, IT project leader for Tesco.
