Wal-Mart, Safeway Affected by Beef Recall

Wal-Mart and Safeway were two of the most notable names among the many retailers nationwide affected by the second largest beef recall in history. On Friday, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. announced that some of its discount stores and Sam's Club wholesale stores may be affected by the massive recall of 19 million pounds of ground beef by ConAgra Foods. Inc.

The Bentonville, Ark.-based retailer, said it has removed all recalled three-pound bags of Great Value frozen beef patties from its shelves. It said specific fresh ground beef in five-pound rolls, bulk, and patties that customers have purchased may also be affected.

Safeway was also notified by one of its suppliers, Fairbank Farms, that it had received product from the expanded recall lot. The nation's second-largest supermarket chain announced that about 500 of its stores in northern California, Denver, and Chicago were affected

"We want to make it clear that this recall does not apply to any of the ground beef products currently available in our stores," said Safeway spokesperson Greg TenEyck. "We are asking our customers out of an abundance of caution to check their freezers for these products."
