Weis Opens Superstore in Boonsboro, Md.

SUNBURY, Pa. -- Weis Markets, based here, celebrated the opening of a new superstore in Boonsboro, Md. over the weekend. Earlier this fall the 158-store chain broke ground for a new superstore in nearby Thurmont, Md.

"We think our neighbors and customers will be pleased with the final result. We've tailored our store to the community we serve -- it has expansive perishable departments and offers outstanding convenience, value, and variety. We can't wait to get started," said Jonathan Weis, Weis Markets vice chairman.

The new store focuses heavily on prepared takeout offerings, a category that will play an increasingly larger role in the retailer's ongoing store expansion plans, Weis Markets president Norm Rich said last week as a panelist on a C.E.O. Roundtable at the Grocery Manufacturers Association(GMA) Future of Food conference in Washington.

"We're planning on opening a 72,000-square-foot store next year, [and] the extra space will be used for takeout, not traditional grocery," said Rich, noting the chain's plans to enhance its organic and natural food sections, as well as more self-checkout systems.

During the new Boonsboro store's grand opening festivities, Weis made $14,000 in charitable donations, including a $10,000 gift to help establish a maternity/birthing room at Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown Md., and separate $1,000 donations to the Boonsboro Free Library-Washington County Library System and Boonsboro's fire, police, and rescue departments.

"Boonsboro is a growing town rich in tradition and history. We are very grateful for all the support we've received at the local level, particularly from the town of Boonsboro, and we wanted to show our appreciation. Wherever we operate, we work hard to be a good neighbor and a responsible corporate citizen," noted Jonathan Weis.

Weis Markets' new Boonsboro store features:

-- A full-service deli with a pizza kitchen offering made-to-order pizzas and a selection of take-home meals and prepared heat-and-serve meals;

-- A 450-item produce department that includes a wide selection of organic and natural items;

-- A grocery department offering a wide range of brand-name and store brand products. This section also has an extensive selection of gourmet, ethnic, and organic/natural products;

-- Expanded HBC offerings;

-- A meat department offering certified Angus and USDA Choice beef and a full-service seafood department;

-- A full-service bakery offering a wide range of fresh-baked breads, muffin, cakes, and doughnuts; and

-- A full-service pharmacy and an eight-pump gas station.

Weis Markets currently operates 158 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, and West Virginia. It also owns SuperPetz, a pet supply superstore chain with 32 locations in 11 states.
