Wild Oats Purchasing Wind Power

BOULDER, Colo. -- Wild Oats Natural Marketplace here is literally throwing caution to the wind by committing to buy wind power for 10 percent of its energy purchases for its Pacific Northwest stores, according to the Portland Business Journal.

The company said it's the first grocery chain in the Northwest to support renewable energy. Its green energy suppliers include Portland General Electric's Clean Wind program, Pacific Power's Blue Sky Block program, and Clark Public Utilities' Green Lights program.

"More businesses are becoming conscious of the environmental impacts of their energy use and are choosing to purchase renewable energy to offset those impacts and reach their sustainability goals," Diane Zipper, director of green power programs with the Renewable Northwest Project, told the Portland Business Journal. "We applaud Wild Oats' efforts to improve the livability of our region through their commitment to green power."

Wild Oats said its conversion to 10 percent green power would have the same environmental impact as not driving 1.3 million miles, planting 244 acres of trees, and preventing 616 tons of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere.

Wild Oats operates 102 stores throughout the United States and Canada, with annual sales of nearly $960 million.
