B&R Poised to Expand With New Super Saver

Associated Wholesale Grocers (AWG) of Kansas City has cleared the way for Lincoln, Neb.-based B&R Stores to expand with a new Super Saver location in the Five Points neighborhood of Grand Island, Neb.

The new addition to B&R's store base will be purchased by AWG, which will demolish the existing Skagway store and construct a new building that will be leased to the employee-owned B&R Stores for the new Super Saver. As previously announced, Skagway will close its Grand Island stores on May 22.

“We’ve been a part of Grand Island for a long time and we’re looking forward to serving the community better,” said Pat Raybould, president of B&R, who noted that Nebraska’s largest independent grocer will "be able to offer more selection and services at our Five Points location.”

B&R's original Super Saver at 1602 W. 2nd Street in the town is currently under construction to accommodate for a pharmacy and expanded spirits section, with more renovations to follow.

Meanwhile, B&R's forthcoming Five Points Super Saver, groundbreaking for which is expected to begin in the fall with a grand opening planned for the summer of 2016, will feature a drive-thru pharmacy, an extensive selection of natural/organic products, floral services and fuel pumps.

Raybould expects they will hire 130 employees to work at the new Super Saver location.

B&R is Nebraska’s largest independent grocery, founded in 1964, and has grown to include the Russ’s Market, Super Saver, Save Best Foods and Grand Central Apple Market banners, which are located in seven cities in Nebraska and Iowa.
