MacHesney & Miller Closes After 152 Years

MacHesney & Miller opened for business in 1862 in Glen Ellyn, Ill., but on Oct. 4, it closed its doors for the last time after more than 150 years in business. Owner Bob Behrmann said it no longer was economically feasible to keep the store open after five generations of his family had operated the independent grocery store.

The store had been a true family affair, employing multiple generations of the same family in the store. “I’m going to miss the people, the customers,” said Christine Darschewski, a long-time employee in a local news report. The store had been an institution in the community, according to customers.

All unsold items were donated to local food banks and developers are planning a mixed-use building on the site that includes retail space and apartments.
