Michigan Grocers Assoc. Names Kessel Award Winners

The Michigan Grocers Association (MGA) has named McDonough’s Market and Koegel Meats its 2015 Kessel Outstanding Achievement Award winners. The awards will be presented during the MGA Fall Conference on Sept. 20 in Mackinac, Mich.

Beaver Island’s McDonough’s Market, which was named Outstanding Retailer, is the island’s only grocer and is owned by the third generation of the McDonough family – Bill, Jim and Tim McDonough. It sells everything from food staples to souvenirs and clothing and is known for its fresh produce and fresh-cut meat.

Koegel Meats in Flint was named 2015 Outstanding Business Partner. President John Koegel and Chairman Albert Koegel recently expanded the company’s distribution into Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky.

“Both the McDonough and the Koegel families have made significant contributions to Michigan’s food industry,” said Linda Gobler, MGA president and CEO. “They are active in the association and have earned the respect and admiration of colleagues and customers throughout the state and beyond. The awards are well-deserved recognition.”

Named for deceased board member Al Kessel, who founded Kessel Food Markets, the awards are given to one retailer and one business partner who reflect his generous spirit. The winners are chosen by a 120-member committee.
