Kroger Acquires Hiller’s in Metro Detroit

The Kroger Co. is acquiring the seven-store Hiller’s Markets chain in the Detroit metropolitan area, the latest move by the Cincinnati-based grocer to enhance its presence throughout the Midwest.

The stores will become part of Kroger’s Michigan division, which currently operates 123 stores and 64 fuel centers in the state. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

“We are excited to welcome Hiller’s customers into our stores and introduce them to our great people,” said Jayne Homco, president of Kroger’s Michigan division. “Hiller’s has a decades-long reputation of great customer service and outstanding selection of local and ethnic foods, and we look forward to continuing those traditions as we expand in this market.”

Kroger’s additional efforts to expand throughout the area include new store and remodeling projects in Michigan and Indiana.

Founded in 1941, Hiller’s Markets has stores in West Bloomfield, Ann Arbor, Northville, Plymouth, South Lyon and two stores in Commerce Township. Following completion of the sale, expected in July, Kroger will assume the lease for the store at 3010 Union Lake Road, but will not operate the store as there is a recently built Kroger store and fuel center across the street.

The stores will continue to operate as Hiller’s until the sale is finalized, then will be rebadged as Kroger.

“After 75 years of providing the finest quality groceries and services to SE Michigan I am pleased that Hiller’s legacy of excellence will be continued by the Kroger Company,” said Jim Hiller, president and CEO of Hiller’s Markets. “I encourage Hiller’s customers to continue shopping at Kroger following the transition and to continue supporting their favorite associates.”

The Kroger Co. of Michigan includes 123 stores, 64 fuel centers, 103 pharmacies and the Michigan Dairy. Kroger operates 2,625 supermarkets and multidepartment stores in 34 states and the District of Columbia under two dozen local banner names.
