Ahold Readies for 1st Small Store in Philly

Ahold USA is gearing up to take the wraps off its first small concept pilot store in the Midtown Village neighborhood of Center City Philadelphia, at 1222 Walnut St., in a recently restored property known as the Stapler Building, according to local media reports.

The name of the soon-to-open “experimental” compact store is "Everything Fresh," which is being billed as "small on space, but big on organic and value" and prepared foods.

Set to occupy roughly 3,700 square feet of selling space on the building's ground floor (plus 1,500 feet in the basement for prep), according to reports in both The Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia Magazine, the store is currently seeking full- and part-time associates with a starting rate of $10 per hour.

As Ahold USA's COO James McCann recently told Progressive Grocer during an extensive interview, the company has been closely studying and exploring "what might work well for" a smaller-format store.

While McCann said at the time that “no concrete plans at present” had been mapped out for an Ahold USA-brand small-store concept, plans were clearly underway, as indicated with confirmation of the same. “We’ve got a very good R&D team behind it, gearing up for tests and trials to see if there’s something out there that we want to develop and deploy."
