A&P Names New EVP, Ops

The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. Inc. (A&P) has appointed Paul Hertz to the position of EVP, Operations. Hertz replaces, Mark Kramer, who has left A&P to pursue other interests, according to the Montvale, N.J.-based grocer.

An industry veteran with over 20 years in a range of retail sales management and operations positions, Hertz was previously EVP of retail stores at OfficeMax, in which capacity he handled all U.S. retail operations for the company. Before that, he was OfficeMax’s SVP of store operations. Hertz’s other previous roles include VP of Wild Oats Stores, VP of store operations of ShopKo, and several field and VP-level positions at Kroger division Fred Meyer.

As A&P’s new EVP, operations, Hertz will head up the grocer’s field operations team.

“An important part of our turnaround is building a dynamic executive management team with the skills and expertise necessary to lead our company to excellence,” said A&P executive chairman Christian Haub. “With his high-level skill set and vast experience, [Hertz] not only believes excellence can be achieved, but he is also able to illuminate the path to it.”

A&P operates 429 stores in eight states and the District of Columbia under the following banners: A&P, Waldbaum's, Pathmark, Best Cellars, The Food Emporium, Super Foodmart, SuperFresh and Food Basics.
