Dollar General Names EVPs

Dollar General Corp. has hired Jason Reiser as EVP and chief merchandising officer effective July 12, and Carman Wenkoff as EVP and CIO, effective July 10.

Replacing the recently retired Jim Thorpe, Reiser brings more than 30 years of experience in retail management, private-brand sourcing and regulatory affairs to his new role. Wenkoff, succeeding current CIO Ryan Boone upon his retirement, has, over the course of his career, successfully implemented digital strategies and payment and loyalty solutions at retail.

“Jason is an innovative merchant who has a broad range of experience in discount retail and a track record of leadership excellence,” said Todd Vasos, CEO of Goodlettsville, Tenn.-based Dollar General. “I believe Jason’s deep understanding of our customer and small-box retail, coupled with his proven ability to drive results, will strengthen our leadership team as we strive to capture future growth opportunities.”

Reiser most recently held the role of EVP and COO of The Vitamin Shoppe, where he oversaw merchandising, operations and supply chain. Previously, he was chief merchandising officer at Family Dollar from 2013 to 2016. A trained pharmacist, Reiser began his retail career as a pharmacy manager at Walmart, rising through the ranks to become VP, merchandising, health and family care for Sam’s Club from 2010 to 2013.

“I am excited to have someone with Carman’s experience and digital expertise to be joining our team to lead this important part of the business,” noted Vasos “We continue to focus on enhancing our digital presence and meeting our customers when and how they decide to engage with us. I’m confident with Carman’s vision, we will continue to strengthen these efforts as well as leveraging technology to improve our processes, lower costs and drive a better customer experience.”

Wenkoff’s most recent position was CIO and chief digital officer for Subway restaurants, where his IT team created an innovative digital marketing platform and point-of-sale system, as well as many other integrated store technology solutions to help boost sales and profitability. Before that, Wenkoff was part of the IT and management team at the restaurant chain’s franchisee-owned Independent Purchasing Cooperative and chairman of the Retail Gift Card Association. Earlier in his career, he held senior IT management roles with several tech firms focused on digital marketing and payment and loyalty solutions. Wenkoff started off as a lawyer, serving as general counsel for Pivotal Corp., and was also VP, operations/finance and general counsel for Ontain Corp., a technology company dedicated to mobile and retail merchant solutions.

Dollar General operates 13,601 stores in 44 states.
