NGA, LSU Team for October Management Program

The National Grocers Association’s (NGA) Center for Family-Owned Business, in collaboration with the Louisiana State University (LSU) E.J. Ourso College of Business/Stephenson Entrepreneurship Institute, has developed a three-day interactive program to help such companies transition smoothly from one generation to the next. “Invest in Success by Perpetuating Family Business Through Professional Management” will be offered Oct. 26 through Oct. 28 at the training facility of NGA member Associated Grocers Inc. in Baton Rouge, La. The distributor serves more than 200 independently owned and operated retail outlets in Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi.

The three-day program will educate family retail and wholesale food businesses on how to deal with such issues as strategic business planning, formulating a better leadership style and interpersonal effectiveness, estate planning, will development, and creating a continuing entrepreneurial “think tank” for retailers, manufacturers and suppliers to offer input and feedback while forming a network for family-owned businesses.

Specifically in the area of transition, the event will help prepare attendees to plan for their company’s future viability, as well as aiding in the assessment, identification and understanding of personality and leadership styles and skills; enhancing communications among family members and staffers; assisting with estate planning, equity and transition; establishing family plans with benchmarks to gauge progress, and providing follow-through measures.

The Center For Family-Owned Business’ mission is to ensure the ongoing success of these companies by offering programs addressing current and future issues.
