PG Presents H-E-B With 2010 Retailer of the Year Award

Progressive Grocer, a leading voice of the grocery industry for nearly 90 years, presented executives from San Antonio-based H-E-B with its highest annual honor – the 2010 Retailer of the Year – at a gala event at the 329-store retailer’s headquarters earlier today.

Extensive coverage of H-E-B’s national recognition appears in the food industry’s leading trade publication's October 2010 issue, which in its cover story, “The Heart of Texas,” pays tribute to the many outstanding contributions of H-E-B’s 76,000 partners (employees) in tandem with PG’s 2010 Retailer of the Year winner’s 105th anniversary.

Steve Lichtenstein, PG VP/group publisher, and Meg Major, PG’s editor-in-chief, presented the award during a celebration held for H-E-B partners at the company’s headquarters on Oct. 6. In recognition of H-E-B’s commitment to the community, PG also presented a $5,000 gift to Boys and Girls Club of San Antonio in H-E-B’s honor. H-E-B, wishing to express its own thanks to the community for its support, presented the Boys and Girls Club of San Antonio with a $15,000 gift.

“We are extremely proud to receive this industry honor,” said H-E-B President/COO Craig Boyan. “It is a milestone in our 105-year history that was made possible by the dedication of our partners who strive each day to provide our customers with a superior shopping experience.”

Renowned for its exceptional service, fresh food, quality products, close connection with the communities it serves, and an abiding commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainability, H-E-B thrives on the many talents and unique skills of its diverse and dedicated partners, who ultimately provide the retailer with a powerful advantage in an extremely competitive industry.

“H-E-B truly stands apart among the nation’s supermarket retailers, largely as a result of its admirable corporate culture that places a high value on its people throughout all levels of the organization,” said Major. “We are proud to salute H-E-B with our highest annual honor and extend our sincere congratulations to the entire company for demonstrating true leadership in the grocery industry.”

With sales of more than $16 billion, H-E-B operates 329 stores in Texas and Mexico.
