‘Stay Home and Grill Out’ Winner Named

The “2012 Stay Home Grill Out” promotion, which highlighted the summer grilling season in the Northeast, has named a grand-prize winner: Kristian Penas of Brooklyn, N.Y., a shopper at one of Bethpage, N.Y.-based King Kullen’s 41 stores, all of which are in the region.

The beef checkoff, through the Northeast Beef Promotion Initiative (NEBPI) and the Bedford-based Pennsylvania Beef Council, teamed with 10 retailers throughout the Northeast on the promotion.

Penas, who won $500 in free groceries, harnessed the power of social media by sharing the news of the promotion with her Facebook friends. When asked what her favorite beef cut to grill was, Penas chose the ribeye steak, sirloin or T-bone, although if she has the time and isn’t grilling, she likes to prepare roast beef.

In regard to grilling beef during the summer, Penas noted: “You cannot go wrong with beef; [it] looks great, smells fantastic and tastes delicious. Lots of people are afraid of dealing with raw meat, but I think beef is very easy to cook.”

Additionally, three first-prize winners, Vicki Frisino of Clarks Summit, Pa., a shopper at Sunbury, Pa.-based Weis Markets, and Jeanette Newton of Coatesville, Pa., and Timothy Luscko of Royersford, Pa., both shoppers at Reading, Pa.-based Redner’s Warehouse Markets, received 10-piece “Beef: It’s What’s For Dinner” engraved kitchen knife sets. Runner-up prizes included copies of “The Healthy Beef Cookbook.”

During the promotion, which ran from May through September, a total of 323 stores offered recipe booklets, shelf wobblers and meat department posters. Shoppers could enter to win prizes online.
