Demoulas Honored for Workplace Safety

Demoulas Super Markets Inc. has received an award for outstanding safety performance during the MEMIC Annual Meeting of the Policyholders last month. The New England supermarket chain was one of only 10 out of more than 20,000 MEMIC policyholders – and the only grocer – to be honored by Portland, Maine-based workers’-compensation specialist The MEMIC Group.

Tewksbury, Mass.-based Demoulas, which operates stores under the Market Basket banner, performs a job safety analysis (JSA) on each job function, consistently conducts safety audits and has a rotating safety committee that meets monthly to maintain a successful safety culture.

“The corporate safety team, starting with Operations Manager David McLean, Safety Director Roger Foster and Operations Supervisor Michael Meuse, do a great job implementing up-to-date best practices,” said MEMIC Safety Management Consultant Alexis Westin.

“We don’t have a successful program because OSHA requires it,” noted Foster. “We do because it’s the right thing to do for our associates. They should be able to come into a healthy and safe environment each day.”

Demoulas operates 77 stores in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, and opened its first Maine store in 2013.
