Harris Teeter to Open Large-format Store in 2019: Report

Construction is slated to begin this summer on what will be one of the largest Harris Teeter stores in North Carolina, at 76,000 square feet, according to a published report.

Scheduled to open by early 2019, the store will be built on Carolina Beach Road in Wilmington as the anchor of a new commercial center, The Crossroads at Independence, which will also feature a 14-pump Harris Teeter fuel station, the Greater Wilmington Business Journal reported.

Additionally, Dean Scarafoni, president and founder of Manchester, Mass.-based Live Oak Development Co., told the publication that the supermarket would “have a lot of new features that we haven’t seen in Wilmington.”  He added that the building process would take about 18 months to complete.

When contacted by Progressive Grocer, Scarafoni said that he believed that the new store would be similar to the large-format location that opened last year in Pinehurst, N.C., and offers such features as an adjacent gas station, a beer growler station, a juice bar and an expanded general merchandise section. Both the Pinehurst location and the planned Wilmington store are about twice the size of a a typical Harris Teeter.

Meanwhile, a Harris Teeter spokeswoman told PG that the company had not yet announced any 2019 store openings.

A wholly owned subsidiary of The Kroger Co., Matthews, N.C.-based Harris Teeter operates more than 230 stores and seven fuel centers in seven states and the District of Columbia.
