Food Lion Debuting Kids’ Grocery Exhibit

Food Lion and the Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem in North Carolina are offering an interactive exhibit that will enable kids to learn about the grocery industry. Children can go behind scaled-down counters and cash registers and pretend to check out customers, as well as experience three preparation areas.

“This new Food Lion exhibit will give children an exciting grocery shopping experience, with fun food preparation areas and sophisticated checkout counters that accommodate a wide range of ages,” said Winston-Salem Museum Executive Director Elizabeth Dampier.

Describing the exhibit as a place “where children can learn first-hand about what it’s like to be in a Food Lion grocery store,” Allen Frost, Food Lion’s director of operations for the Winston-Salem area, added: “This exhibit will allow them to experience the everyday operations of a grocery store in a fun, interactive way.”

At the same time, the nonprofit children's museum will introduce its “Inner Voice” initiative to help children develop self-esteem and confidence by making mindful decisions, and to encourage empathy and compassion for themselves and others. The initiative will influence the museum’s programming, including food and wellness events, select story times and crafts, and added activities mounted throughout the coming year.

Kicked off with a Jan. 31 press event, the Food Lion exhibit opens Saturday, Feb. 2, at 10 a.m., and closes at 5 p.m.

Employing about 58,000 associates, Food Lion, based in Salisbury, N.C., is a company of Delhaize America, the U.S. division of Brussels-based Delhaize Group and operates more than 1,100 supermarkets.
