Foodland Co-founder Joanna Sullivan Dies at 94

Joanna Sullivan, co-founder of Honolulu-based supermarket chain Foodland, died Sept. 2 at the age of 94, according to local TV station KHON2. She and her late husband, Maurice "Sully" Sullivan, opened the first Foodland store in May 1948.

The name of the store was designed as a reflection of the large variety of products available, she recounted on the occasion of the company's 65th anniversary in 2013.

The family's companies currently encompass 32 food stores across Hawaii under the Foodland and Sack N Save banners, in addition to more than 150 retail locations in nine states.

As the company grew, the Sullivans became more involved in the community as prominent philanthropists, funding many scholarships and making large donations.

Among her survivors are four children, including Jenai Sullivan Wall, chairman and CEO of Foodland Super Market Ltd., and five grandchildren.
