Former Stop & Shop CEO Joins the Digital Lumens Board

Digital Lumens, a developer of intelligent lighting systems for retailers, added former Stop & Shop José Alvarez to its board of directors.

"Jose brings a seasoned customer perspective and strengthens our ability to expand our Intelligent Lighting Systems into a broader range of industrial markets -- creating a stronger foundation for the next phase of our growth,” said Tom Pincince, president and CEO of Boston-based Digital Lumens.

Alvarez has significant management experience in the supermarket industry, most recently as president and CEO of Stop & Shop/Giant-Landover, a subsidiary of Royal Ahold, NV. He currently serves on the faculty of the Harvard Business School and holds Board positions at TJX Corporation and United Rentals, Inc.

Prior to his appointment as Stop & Shop chief, Alvarez held senior positions as the company's EVP of supply chain and logistics, and as VP of strategic initiatives. His previous experience includes serving as VP of grocery merchandising for Shaw's Supermarkets and director of market research for American Stores.

In addition to his board positions at TJX and United Rentals, Alvarez is on the boards of the Massachusetts Chapter of the Nature Conservancy, the Commonwealth School, the Joyce Foundation, Princeton in Latin America, and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Additionally, he is chair of the Advisory Council of the Massachusetts Business Alliance for Education. He holds an MBA from the University of Chicago and is a graduate of Princeton University with an AB degree.

"Digital Lumens is applying some of the best technical and business minds to solving the real-world energy efficiency challenges deep within the supply chain," said Alvarez. "My strong commitment to sustainability, depth of experience in this industry, and high regard for the work the team is doing make this an opportunity to help move the company forward."
