Fresh & Easy, Unilever Plant Deep Roots

Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market and Unilever have teamed up to plant 25,000 much-needed trees in Arizona, California and Nevada.

Through Oct. 10, the “Buy any Three, Give a Tree” program enables shoppers who purchase any three participating Unilever food brands, including Breyers, Ben & Jerry’s, Best Foods, Wish-Bone, Ragu and Skippy, to receive 33 percent off instantly. For each purchase of three participating items, Unilever and Fresh & Easy will donate a tree to the local community in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation.

“This initiative is a great opportunity for Fresh & Easy to come together with Unilever and the Arbor Day Foundation, and engage our customers and neighbors for a good environmental cause,” said Tim Mason, CEO of El Segundo, Calif.-based Fresh & Easy, a division of U.K. grocer Tesco with 199 stores in Arizona, California and Nevada. “Our commitment to the environment extends beyond just our stores.”

“At Unilever, we’re committed to sustainable living and making a difference in our local communities,” noted Paul Bello, VP of grocery for the Englewood Cliffs, N.J.-based company. “This partnership not only supports our larger Unilever Sustainable Living Plan, but it also allows us to provide consumers with great savings and support for a great cause such as the Arbor Day Foundation. By simply shopping for brands they love, our consumers in Arizona, California and Nevada are helping their local communities become more environmentally friendly.”

At the close of the promotion, Unilever, Fresh & Easy and the Arbor Day Foundation will hold a tree-planting ceremony with trees donated through the program. According to the Nebraska City, Neb.-based nonprofit organization, planting trees in local communities helps to lower air pollution, absorb carbon dioxide and control stormwater runoff.
