    Giant Eagle Entering Indiana

Pittsburgh-based Giant Eagle has confirmed reports that it will expand to Indiana next year.

The regional retailer has signed an agreement to put one of its upscale Market District units, along with a GetGo convenience store, in The Bridges development in Carmel, Ind., a suburb of Indianapolis. The new store is expected to open in 2015.

“As we look to become contributing members of the Indianapolis area, we are also actively evaluating opportunities for additional locations,” said Giant Eagle CEO Laura Karet in a statement.

Progressive Grocer reported in December that Giant Eagle was reportedly looking to open as many as six stores in the Indianapolis area, where it would compete with locally based Marsh Supermarkets and Midwestern giant Kroger.

In addition to Marsh and Kroger, Indianapolis is home to a diverse array of grocery chains, including Earth Fare, Fresh Thyme Farmers Market and The Fresh Market, as well as Walmart's Neighborhood Market format.

Privately held Giant Eagle operates more than 200 stores in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and Maryland.
