Giant Eagle Opens Ohio’s First Market District

Pittsburgh-based Giant Eagle is opening its first Market District store in Ohio on Thursday with a star-studded grand opening event.

Adam Richman, star of the Travel Channel’s “Man vs. Food,” is expected to headline the grand opening of the market, which Food Network celebrity and Columbus native Guy Fieri calls “the Disneyland of grocery stores.”

Described as a “true foodie utopia,” the 132,000-square-foot store will open in the redeveloped Kingsdale Shopping Center in Upper Arlington, featuring what Giant Eagle calls culinary, dining, and shopping “retail-tainment.”

Kicking things off will be the presentation of $10,000 in scholarships during the final judging of the Columbus State College Top Chef Apprentice Challenge, with celebrity judges including football star and Grill 27 owner Eddie George and “Hell’s Kitchen” winner Christina Machamer. That will be immediately followed by a grand opening press conference featuring David Shapira, Giant Eagle chairman, CEO and president; Laura Karet, senior EVP and chief strategy officer; and John Lucot, EVP and COO.

Market District customers can experience all things food and feast on specialties from the crêpes of France to the street vendors of Asia, with numerous other international destinations layered in between. An ongoing schedule of in-store events will feature celebrity and resident chefs at the high-tech demonstration kitchen. A sweet shop features the hand-dipped chocolate novelties, gourmet confections and nostalgic candy classics like Necco Wafers and Pixie Stix, as well as fresh-roasted nuts, hand-dipped caramel apples, just-spun cotton candy and fresh kettle corn.
