Giant-Landover Backs Breast Cancer Awareness

Giant Food LLC is proudly pink in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. The Ahold USA division, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary, has introduced a chain-wide promotion offering shoppers lots of ways to “Buy, Get, Give” to breast cancer-related organizations in their local communities.

When customers buy certain items from Procter & Gamble, General Mills, Giant Food Own Brands and other participating vendors during the month, they’ll receive a reward such as a $10 prepaid Visa card or money off their grocery orders. What’s more, Giant and the accompanying vendor partner will make a donation to an area organization supporting breast cancer research, education, and awareness.

“According to the National Institutes of Health, breast cancer affects one in eight women, and during October, we’ll work together to make a difference,” said Anthony Hucker, president of Landover, Md.-based Giant, which operates 173 supermarkets in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia, and employs about 22,000 associates.

Giant will also donate five cents of every pink reusable bag sold in October to the Capital Breast Care Center, and the floral department will make a 25-cent donation to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for the sale of each pink Awareness and Hope & Strength bouquet. Further, Giant’s 159 full-service pharmacies are distributing breast self-examination brochures to customers.
