Giant-Landover Goes to Bat for Kids With Cancer

Giant Food LLC is launching its ninth annual Triple Winner game on April 19 to benefit the pediatric oncology division at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center and the Children’s Cancer Foundation. Since it began in 2005, Triple Winner has raised $11.5 million for pediatric cancer research. This year Giant has pledged to raise $1.6 million for the cause, a $100,000 increase from 2012.

Customers can give $1 at their local Giant stores for a Triple Winner scratch card and a chance to win a gift card, product coupon or cash up to $10,000. All donations will go directly to the organizations.

“As the nation’s capital grocer, Giant is committed to supporting Johns Hopkins and The Children’s Cancer Foundation, local organizations that are recognized nationally for their work with and on behalf of pediatric cancer patients,” noted Anthony Hucker, president of Landover, Md.-based Giant Food, a division of Ahold USA.

Each year, four local patients at the Kimmel Cancer Center serve as Triple Winner ambassadors. This year’s ambassadors are 12-year-old Emily, 7-year-old Mo, 16-year-old Muriel and 19-year-old James.

“Over the past several years, Giant’s Triple Winner Program has helped us push the frontier of cancer research forward,” said Donald Small, director of pediatric oncology at the Kimmel Cancer Center in Baltimore. We are now making discoveries that are improving the cure rates for the future.”

“Giant Food is our No. 1 benefactor in building child/family friendly inpatient and outpatient treatment facilities for children with cancer,” added Shirley Howard, president and founder of the Children’s Cancer Foundation in Owings Mills, Md. “Thanks to Giant, our precious children with cancer can continue to be children while they are receiving treatment.”

Giant operates 170 supermarkets in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia, and employs about 20,000 associates.
