Marsh Could Shut Down in 60 Days

Embattled grocery chain Marsh Supermarkets has been closing its stores in bunches over the past several months, with announcements coming on a near-daily basis.

Now, the Indianapolis-based grocer could be shut down entirely by mid-summer.

Just a day after warning Indiana state officials of another wave of closings and mass layoffs, a Marsh representative said that all remaining stores would close if the company could not find a buyer or partner within 60 days, the Indianapolis Star reported.

Earlier this week, Marsh notified the Indiana Department of Workforce Development that it could lay off more than 1,500 workers by July as it grapples with financial problems and declining sales blamed on “unexpected difficulties” and mounting competition.

Marsh’s store count has plummeted since it was acquired by Boca Raton, Fla.-based Sun Capital Partners in 2006, at which time it had 120 locations in Indiana and Ohio.
