PG Site Examines Retailing in the Sixties

Supermarkets were on a major growth spurt, while social revolution gave birth to the consumer movement in the grocery industry. The 1960s was a decade filled with change and growth, as documented on Progressive Grocer’s microsite, 90.progressivegrocer.com.

Vintage photos and an interactive timeline bring to life major events, such as Harris Teeter’s official start, the evolution of discounting in the supermarket industry, the addition of in-store pharmacies and developments in store design, among others.

Visitors to the site can peruse popular ads and product introductions of the ‘60s, including Quaker Oats’ launch of Life cereal and Kellogg’s 1965 Fruit ‘n Cereal Promotion. In addition, videos in the Multimedia section recall fun TV ads from the period.

Progressive Grocer and its Deerfield, Ill.-based parent company, Stagnito Media, developed the site to celebrate 90 years of continuous publishing, and to preserve the history of the supermarket industry.

The site will be continually updated this year with content from the archives of the magazine, as well as reader-submitted items.
