Price Chopper ‘Checks’ Hunger in Its Tracks

Price Chopper’s 2012 “Check Out Hunger” campaign raised $24,682.13 and 34,349 pounds of food for 14 local food banks and their affiliated kitchens and pantries across the Northeast regional chain’s six-state footprint of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont.

“At Price Chopper, we’re committed to helping people feed and care for themselves and their families throughout the year,” said Mona Golub, VP of public relations and consumer & marketing services. “After the year-end holidays, many food banks have low reserves. Our Check Out Hunger campaign helps to raise funds, food and awareness that hunger is a year-round issue for so many in our communities.”

For six weeks in November and December, the food drive enabled shoppers to add a small monetary donation to their bills, bringing the total to the next whole dollar amount, through the “Round Up Your Change program,” and/or purchase a Food Package of pantry essentials for $5, $10 or $15.

The accumulated food and check donations are going to area food banks and pantries in the communities Price Chopper serves.

Based in Schenectady, N.Y., the family-operated Golub Corp. owns and operates 130 Price Chopper grocery stores in New York, Vermont, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Golub’s 23,000 teammates collectively own more than 50 percent of the company’s privately held stock, making it one of the nation’s largest privately held corporations that is predominantly employee-owned.
