Price Chopper Chief Outlines Community-focused Strategies

In part two of an exclusive video segment, Progressive Grocer’s Joe Tarnowski continues his conversation with Neil Golub, chairman and CEO of Price Chopper Supermarkets, about the company’s efforts in diversity and sustainability, as well as its extensive involvement in the communities it serves.

Underscoring the value of diversity is a top priority for Schenectady, N.Y.-based Price Chopper, and the company continues to look at differences as opportunities for growth. In this candid interview, Golub says that Price Chopper is committed to providing teammates with a challenging, culturally diverse, friendly, participative and rewarding environment.

“We want to ensure that minority teammates get the opportunities they need,” Golub says. And to deliver on that commitment, the company provides diversity training, along with many other programs that foster an inclusive work environment.

Tarnowski and Golub also discuss the company’s green efforts and continued movement toward sustainability.

In its Colonie Plaza location, which opened in upstate New York in 2009, Price Chopper has made substantial investments to incorporate various green and energy-saving initiatives throughout the store. Green features include a 400-kilowatt United Technologies Corp. natural-gas fuel cell, which provides a significant amount of power for the store.

Additionally, the company’s new corporate headquarters was constructed in accordance with the USGBC's LEED standards. The structure is so innovative, in fact, that “everyone wants to come visit our office building,” Golub says.

Whether it's installing the latest energy-efficient technologies, engaging teammates to rethink the way they use resources, or aggressively developing partnerships with other sustainability-focused companies and nongovernmental organizations, Price Chopper is actively seeking to be an environmental leader in the supermarket business, according to Golub.

He also notes the company’s close working relationship with FMI to support and educate consumers on today’s growing market.

Price Chopper is a huge advocate for supporting the communities it serves, on both a national and local level. Golub says the company is proud of the fact that many charitable and philanthropic organizations have benefited from its financial support and involvement.

Golub also talks about Price Chopper’s many youth and community projects with Tarnowski, underscoring the company’s efforts to singlehandedly “rebuild” Schenectady.
