Ralph’s Grocery to Help Clean Up Santa Monica Beaches

Ralph’s Grocery Co. and Heal the Bay have teamed up to fund resources for Coastal Cleanup Day, the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium and a Heal the Bay activity guide highlighting ways to for kids to prevent marine pollution in their communities.

Representatives from Ralphs will present Heal the Bay staff with a $25,000 donation on Earth Day, Saturday, April 21 at the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium at 10:30 a.m.

“Sustainability is important to Ralphs and Heal the Bay is the perfect partner to help us do our part to protect the environment,” said Kendra Doyel, senior manager, public relations, Ralph’s. “Through our support of the Coastal Cleanup Day, the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium and a Heal the Bay activity guide we hope to provide ongoing education of how to best preserve earth’s limited resources.”

A portion of the funds donated by Ralphs will go toward coordinating Coastal Cleanup Day in Los Angeles County on Sept. 15. Last year Ralphs sponsored the event, which attracted nearly 11,000 volunteers who removed 44,000 pounds of trash at sites across the Southland. The remaining funds will support programs and resources that encourage ocean stewardship in children at Heal the Bay’s education facility, the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium, as well as via an Aqua Explorers guide geared to students in grades K-5.

Aquatic science education is a key component to Heal the Bay’s mission, with the regional environmental group providing field trips for local youth and school groups to visit the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium as well as teacher training and curriculum development to schools all over Southern California.

Ralphs has long supported Heal the Bay’s environmental initiatives, sponsoring the annual Coastal Cleanup Day, as well as A Day Without a Bag, an education event to encourage Angelenos to forgo single-use plastic shopping bags in favor of reusable ones.

Los Angeles-based Ralphs Grocery operates 245 supermarkets, and is a subsidiary of The Kroger Co., Cincinnati, Ohio.
