Remke Sells to Fresh Encounter

Remke Markets, a 10-store chain in the Cincinnati area, has been sold by its founding family to another Ohio-based grocery operator.

Remke Markets' 10 supermarkets in greater Cincinnati and northern Kentucky will now operate under the management of Findlay-based Fresh Encounter Inc., the Cincinnati Enquirer reported. Financial terms of the sale weren't disclosed.

"The decision to sell Remke Markets was a difficult one. However, we are excited that these new resources will allow us to greatly enhance our customer experience," Remke Markets President Matthew Remke said Friday, as quoted by the Enquirer. "This change will allow us to continue to deliver on our promise of a local, neighborhood grocery with exceptional service in convenient locations, as well as to preserve valuable employment for our dedicated associates."

Founded in 1897, Remke Markets reportedly was the last Cincinnati-area-based grocery chain other than the nation-spanning Kroger Co. The sale allows Matthew Remke’s father, Bill, to retire after 60 years with the family business, the Enquirer reported.

Remke Markets has closed three stores since 2015, locations that were originally part of the Bigg's chain that Remke acquired in 2010.

Fresh Encounter's markets include Sack ‘n Save, Community Markets, Great Scot and Chief Markets.
