ShopRite to Debut Upstate N.Y. Gas Station

The ShopRite grocery chain will bow its first Capital Region gas station, according to a published report.

The 16-pump site, an existing Mobil station which is currently closed for renovations, will offer discounts to those with ShopRite’s Price Plus Club card upon reopening in early September. ShopRite Supermarkets Inc. (SRS), a wholly owned subsidiary of Keasbey, N.J.-based retail cooperative Wakefern Food Corp., will operate the location, which will also include a convenience store.

Tom Urtz, VP of human resources and community affairs for SRS, told the Times Union in Albany, that the chain is actively seeking to acquire other stations.

Price Chopper, based in Schenectady, N.Y., runs a similar discount program, “Fuel AdvantEdge, in the area and beyond.

Although Urtz told the newspaper he knew about Price Chopper’s program, he declined to provide details on how ShopRite’s initiative would compare, saying that it would be made public when the gas station was ready to reopen.
