ShopRite Names Reusable Bag Design Contest Winner

ShopRite and General Mills revealed the grand-prize winner of the “Designed to Fight Hunger” reusable bag design contest, on Saturday, June 8, at the ShopRite of Williamstown, N.J. As well as having her unique design (right) placed on reusable bags sold at all 250 ShopRite locations, Williamstown resident Katrice Sylvester received a prize of $2,500. A matching amount was donated to the Food Bank of South Jersey.

“I have seen the effects of hunger first-hand, and it is an issue that is very close to my heart,” said Sylvester, a senior at Richard Stockton College of New Jersey studying graphic design, who entered the contest as a school assignment. “I am so honored to be a part of this fight against hunger, and it is my hope that this design speaks to the issue while motivating others to get out there and make a difference in the community.”

In support of “ShopRite Partners In Caring,” its year-round, community-based hunger-fighting initiative, ShopRite invited aspiring artists to create original designs that could be featured on a reusable shopping bag to raise awareness of the issue of hunger.

Also recognized at the event were the contest’s second- and third-place winners: Kristin Stout of Fords, N.J. and Brittany Morris of Mount Ephraim, N.J., respectively.

At the unveiling of the grand-prize-winning bag, customers were encouraged to bring a canned food item for the Food Bank of South Jersey. The event additionally featured free sampling and giveaways, and attendees could have their pictures taken with the No. 31 Cheerios Race Car, which was on site throughout the day.

ShopRite Partners In Caring works with more than 50 food industry manufacturers to donate almost $3 million annually to qualified charitable agencies in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland and Pennsylvania. Since it began in 1999, the initiative has donated nearly $30 million to 1,700-plus charities.
