Stop & Shop Presents Check to Grand-prize ‘Triple Winner’ Recipient

Stop & Shop Supermarket presented a $10,000 check to Bob Barton (center) a Vietnam-era veteran and resident of Monroe Township, N.J., who is the grand-prize recipient in the Ahold USA-owned chain’s annual “Triple Winner” program. At the presentation, Barton was joined Stop & Shop Monroe perishable manger Kia Albert (left) and the mayor of Monroe Township, Richard Pucci (right).

For 21 years, Triple winner has enabled shoppers to make a contribution at checkout to benefit the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center to help fight pediatric cancer and find a cure. The effort has raised more than $50 million for the cause since 1990, including more than $5 million in 2011.

Barton, who was a radio communication specialist during his military service, retired four years ago from a position with the Veterans Administration. He hasn’t yet decided how he’ll use his winnings, but said he would spend the money wisely.

“Cancer impacts so many families; I don’t think any of us know a family that has not been touched by [it],” said Barton, who lost his sister-in-law to brain cancer 15 years ago. “Cancer can be devastating; that is why I always donate -- it was just a dollar on my part, and I never imagined I would be rewarded with $10,000.”
