Tops Acquires 4 Big M Stores

Tops Markets LLC, which operates stores in upstate New York, northern Pennsylvania and western Vermont, has completed the acquisition of four Big M supermarkets.

In March, Williamsville, N.Y.-based Tops entered an agreement with the Bonisteel family to purchase the locations, which are in Boonville, Watertown, Sandy Creek and Adams, N.Y. The acquisition expands Tops’ store base further into northern and central New York and follows the grocer’s acquisition of three Big M supermarkets in Elbridge, Mexico and Jordan, N.Y., earlier this year. Last month, the Jordan and Elbridge stores reopened under the Tops banner.

“These stores are a natural addition to our current footprint,” noted Tops president and CEO Frank Curci, adding that the grocer would implement a capital improvement program under which the stores would be remodeled and converted to the Tops banner by late June. The company has offered all 280 associates employed at the acquired locations continued employment with Tops, and will continue to operate all stores without any interruption in service.

In other Tops news, the company revealed new assignments for seven associates who will oversee initiatives and operations integral to its continued growth and success. Effective immediately, the assignments are as follows: Paul Clough, category manager; Dave Damrath, director of dairy/frozen; Mark DeFazio, director of deli and prepared foods; Sue Durfee, director of bakery; Shawna Halas, merchandiser; Kenny Hausman, merchandiser; and Jim Morgan, category manager.

“This team of key leaders is very important to our operations,” said Curci. “Together they offer nearly 80 years of experience working for Tops Markets, and they are highly respected within our company.”

Tops operates 159 full-service supermarkets -- 154 company-owned and five franchise locations under the Tops, Grand Union and Bryant's banners -- and employs more than 15,000 associates.
