Tops Friendly Markets' 5K/10K to Support Cancer Research

Tops Friendly Markets held its eighth annual 5K/10K Run and Family Walk on Aug. 29 in Buffalo, N.Y., during which the grocer teamed up with the Healthy Ones brand to present the Roswell Park Cancer Institute with a $5,000 check.

Proceeds from the event will benefit research and patient care programs, and will support new clinical treatments and procedures.

"Research is essential in fighting and finding a cure for this disease," said Chuck Gitkin, senior VP of marketing, Smithfield Foods. "Healthy Ones understands the importance of supporting communities that our consumers and employees live and work in. Knowing that this donation will stay here in Buffalo and support the tens-of-thousands who rely on Roswell Park is extremely important to us."

Healthy Ones will further support cancer research by donating 5 cents per tub of lunchmeat and 5 cents per pound of deli meat sold during October, with a maximum program donation of $50,000, to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
