Tops Selling Locally Grown Corn

Tops Markets LLC will exclusively sell Amaize Sweet Corn for a limited time at all of the Northeast regional grocer’s locations. Amaize is a fresh breed of white sweet corn with a distinctive taste and texture that’s the result of 20 years of continuing research and breeding by Caldwell, Iowa-based Crookham Co.

“Amaize takes us beyond what we thought a sweet corn could be,” said Crookham Co. President George Crookham. “It took five generations and a good deal of work with the natural breeding process, but we’ve discovered corn that offers uniquely delicious flavor, texture and bite. And more importantly, we are pleased to partner with local growers and retailers who are committed to delivering great quality.”

Amaize will be sold at from Tops stores for about two weeks. The corn was grown in partnership with Eden Valley Growers in Eden, N.Y. The vegetable-growing farm cooperative handles more than 45 specialty vegetable varieties and is the only grower of Amaize in New York state.

“We’re always looking for ways to provide our neighbors with the widest variety of fresh, homegrown produce, and they will definitely enjoy this flavorful, new variety of sweet corn,” noted Jeff Culhane, VP of perishable operations at Williamsville, N.Y.-based Tops, which operates 133 full-service supermarkets – 127 company-owned and six franchise locations -- upstate New York and northern Pennsylvania

Crookham Co. also breeds yellow, white and Spanish onion varieties.
