United Raised $133,000+ to Support Local Food Banks in 2012

United Supermarkets, LLC has donated more than $133,000 to local area food banks in 2012, as a result of funds raised through its annual holiday food drive scan tag promotions in West Texas markets, its participation in the Souper Bowl of Caring initiative in the DFW metroplex and corporate contributions made by United.

“We are proud to support the important service our food pantries provide throughout the year, in an effort to end hunger,” said Shelby Crews, community relations manager for United Supermarkets, LLC. “We also want to extend our sincere thanks to our wonderful customers for joining us in helping to raise these much needed funds.”

The holiday food drives were a joint effort of United Supermarkets team members and customers that took place November and December in various west Texas markets, including Abilene, Amarillo, Lubbock and Wichita Falls. During the holiday food drives, customers could purchase a can mobile for a cash donation of at least $1 during checkout, and/or donate nonperishable food. The scan tag promotion, combined with United’s corporate contribution in each market, generated a donation of more than $109,000.

In early 2012, United’s DFW-based Market Street stores participated in Souper Bowl of Caring, a national youth-led initiative to fight hunger and poverty in local communities, around the time of the Super Bowl football game. DFW Market Street Guests had the option to purchase a pre-packaged bag or make a cash donation at the register. Guests helped raise more than $24,000 in donations to Souper Bowl of Caring. The majority of in-store donations benefited the North Texas Food Bank and the Tarrant Area Food Bank, who together serve more than 550 hunger-relief agencies in more than 25 Dallas-Fort Worth counties.

Lubbock, Tecas-based United operates 51 stores under four distinct formats: United Supermarkets, Market Street, Amigos and United Express. The company’s 52nd store – a fourth-generation Market Street location – is currently under construction in Lubbock.
