United Supermarkets’ Amigos United Banner Kicks off Health Fair

For the second summer in a row, all three locations of United Supermarkets’ Hispanic-themed Amigos United supermarkets will again host a health fair for its shoppers.

The event is slated for Saturday, June 11 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is open to all interested persons free of charge.

The Amarillo, Lubbock and Plainview store locations will have a registered dietitian on hand to provide body mass index (BMI) assessments and educate shoppers on the NuVal Nutritional Scoring System, which helps make more nutritious purchases. Guests will also have access to blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol screenings, as well as hypertension prevention and dental hygiene education.

“We know how important a healthy lifestyle is to our guests, but we don’t believe being healthy should be overly complicated,” said Tyra M. Carter, PhD, RD, LD, corporate dietitian for United Supermarkets,. “Through programs such as the easy-to-understand NuVal nutritional scoring system and hosting free health fairs, our goal is to arm our guests with the tools to make healthy decisions on a daily basis.”

Health fair attendees will receive free samples of toothbrushes and toothpaste, as well as 1 percent milk and fun milk mustache samples.

Developed by an independent panel of nutrition and medical experts from universities and health organizations, the simple NuVal system rates all foods and beverages on a scale of one to 100 based on a variety of nutritional characteristics. Shoppers can find the NuVal scores on shelf price tags in all locations of United Supermarkets, Market Street and Amigos United.

Lubbock, Texas-based United Supermarkets operates 51 stores under four distinct formats: United Supermarkets, Market Street, Amigos United and United Express.
