Wegmans to Hold Earth Day Organic Festival

Wegmans Food Market’s Earth Day Celebrate Organic event, slated to take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, will feature a wealth of samples, games and tattoos for the kids, and a plastic bag exchange to encourage recycling. Associates will also discuss Wegmans’ various sustainability measures with customers throughout the grocery chain's stores.

Under the bag exchange, the first 300 customers at each store who submit a bag stuffed full of clean bags will receive a coupon for a reusable Wegmans bag made from 40 percent recycled material.

The stores will also offer tasting stations highlighting the grocer’s many organic offerings, including fresh strawberries, ciabatta rolls, chicken noodle soup, frozen smoothies featuring Wegmans Super Yogurt, and Wegmans raw nuts.

Wegmans will provide recycling coloring sheets for children as well as a bingo game which will award bingo winners a berry-flavored organic juice box in the Nature’s Marketplace section.

Shoppers can also get a $1.50-off coupon for an Epoca Ecolution 8-inch sauté pan with Hydrolon nonstick coating and no perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA).

“We’re aways looking for new ways to reduce, reuse and recycle our resources,” said Jason Wadsworth, sustainability coordinator at Rochester, N.Y.-based Wegmans. “We have a responsibility toward future generations to take steps to protect our world today. We want to share with customers what we’re doing and invite them to join us on this journey, so we’ve created posters around the store to show the impact that some of our practices had in 2012.”

The grocer’s sustainability achievements include donating 16 million pounds of food to food banks and composting 5.9 million pounds of food waste; recycling 103 million pounds of cardboard and office paper; and recycling 7.7 million pounds of containers.

“The Earth Day Organic Festival will give customers something extra during their Saturday shopping,” added Wadsworth. “They can try lots of organic products to see which ones may be right for their families and learn more about what we and our vendor partners are doing to protect the environment for generations to come.”

Family-owned Wegmans operates 81 stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, and Massachusetts.
