Wegmans King of Prussia, Pa., Store Finally Opens

Residents of King of Prussia, Pa., have waited a long time to get their own Wegmans Food Markets store: The new 123,000-square-foot location that will open Sunday, May 6 at 7 a.m. at the intersection of N. Gulph and N. Warner Roads was 16 years in the making.

Back in 1996, Rochester, N.Y.-based Wegmans first set its sights on one day opening a store in the Philadelphia suburb. At that time, the grocer had just 54 stores in New York and Pennsylvania, with only five locations in the latter state. While waiting patiently for an appropriate site to become available in King of Prussia, Wegmans spent the intervening years opening stores in the nearby areas of southern New Jersey and Downingtown, Warrington, Collegeville and Malvern, Pa. The company now operates15 stores in the Keystone State, including the one in King of Prussia.

“It took a while for us to get here,” noted the new store’s manager, Kevin Lang, “so you can imagine how eager we are to open our doors to new shoppers and to those who have traveled the extra distance to shop at our other stores waiting for this one to open.” Within a 10-mile radius of the new store, there are already 64,000 people who’ve obtained Wegmans’ Shoppers Club card, and more are enrolling every day on the King of Prussia store’s dedicated website, added Lang.

Among the store’s features is the Market Café prepared food section, which seats 300 indoors and outdoors, and includes The Pub , where food is served to order. “The Pub at this store has double the seating capacity of our other Pubs,” said executive chef Chris Happel, “and includes a bar for more than 30 and booth and banquette seating for 80.” The venue is also the first Wegmans location to offer an outdoor fireplace for dining al fresco.

Additionally, customers who arrive early on opening day, and are near the front of the line, can join employees in the famous Wegmans cheer at 6:55 a.m.

Family-owned Wegmans operates 80 stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, and Massachusetts.
