Weis Markets' CEO Hepfinger Departs

Weis Markets Inc.’s president and CEO, David J. Hepfinger, has left the company to pursue other interests.

Jonathan H. Weis (pictured below), vice chairman, will serve as interim CEO while Robert F. Weis remains chairman of the Sunbury, Pa.-based regional supermarket chain.

In a statement, the company thanked Hepfinger “for his service and contributions and wish[ed] him well in his future endeavors.”

Hepfinger also resigned from the company’s board of directors. As part of the reorganization, Kurt Schertle, EVP, sales and merchandising, will report directly to Jonathan Weis, who will also oversee the company’s real estate/store development, finance and human resources teams.

Until the reorganization is complete, Schertle will take on additional responsibilities, overseeing store operations and its operations support team.

Hepfinger had served as president of Weis Markets, Inc. since March 2008 and its CEO since January 2009, prior to which he served as COO from February 2008 to January 2009. Before joining Weis Markets, Hepfinger served as SVP of retailing and administration at Schenectady, N.Y.-based Price Chopper, Inc., where he had spent 32 years.

Founded in 1912, Weis Markets, Inc. operates 165 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and West Virginia.
