Weis Markets Posts Improved Sales, Earnings in Q4

Weis Markets said on Thursday that continued strategic pricing investments and improved store assortments helped drive a 2.8 percent increase in fourth-quarter sales, to $734.1 million, and a 2.8 percent boost in comps.

The Sunbury, Pa.-based retailer also brought in $16.6 million in Q4 net income, a 21 percent increase from the year-ago, and earnings per share was up 19.6 percent to $0.61.

"In addition, improved store level, supply chain and store support efficiencies helped us deliver a better customer experience, which helped us increase customer traffic and our overall market share," said Chairman and CEO Jonathan Weis.

In the 52 weeks ended Dec.26, 2015, Weis sales increased 3.6 percent to $2.9 billion, driven by a 3.7 percent uptick in comps. Income increased 9.1 percent to $59.3 million while earnings per share increased 9.4 percent.

Weis Markets Inc. operates 163 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and West Virginia.
