Weis Raises $189K with Paws for Pets Promo

Weis Markets raised more than $189,000 in donations and pet supplies for more than 90 local animal shelters and rescue organizations during its fifth annual Paws for Pets program.

Throughout the promotional period, more than 60 Weis locations also hosted pet adopt-a-thon events with local animal shelters and rescue organizations.

Weis’ Hackettstown, N.J. store was the chain-wide leader, raising a combined $4,787 worth of donations for Common Sense for Animals, a pet shelter located in nearby New Village, N.J.

“Animal shelter and rescue organizations have been flooded with a record number of unwanted animals due to the poor economy,” said Dennis Curtin, Weis’ director of Public Relations. “Our Paw Program helps these groups meet this challenge, thanks to the generosity of our customers and the commitment of our store associates, who helped create awareness of our program.”

This year, customers purchased vouchers for $1, $3 or $5, or Paws for Pets bracelets for $1, with all proceeds donated to designated local shelters. Weis customers also donated various pet-related products including dog, cat, puppy and kitten food, cat litter, collars, harnesses and leashes, toys and treats.

Founded in 1912, Sunbury, Pa.-based Weis Markets operates 164 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and West Virginia.
