WinCo Plans Smaller-format Store in Ore.

WinCo Foods will construct a smaller-format store, Waremart by Winco, in Keizer, Ore., in 2017.

While smaller than a typical WinCo, the 40,000-square-foot store is designed specifically for markets such as Keizer. The layout will include WinCo’s trademark “Wall of Values” at the entrance, and will offer a wide assortment of grocery items, as well as full produce, meat and bulk foods departments. It also will carry a variety of organic, gluten-free and natural foods.

“Our bulk foods department has more than 700 items that can be purchased in whatever quantity the customer desires,” a WinCo representative said. “Bulk foods selections include an abundance of rice varieties, dried beans, pastas, baking ingredients, cereals, snacks, candies and pet foods. Customers love the fact that they can buy as little or as much as they like – from two teaspoons of a specific seasoning or spice to a 50-pound sack of flour.”

The new store’s name harkens back to WinCo’s original Waremart name when it first opened in 1967. When complete, the store will employ approximately 75 to 80 individuals.

WinCo acquired the lot on which the new store will operate – as well as other properties – following the merger of Safeway and Albertsons, Oregon's Statesman Journal newspaper reported. The site previously housed a Haggen that opened and shuttered over a few months in 2015.

Boise, Idaho-based WinCo Foods oeprates 110 employee-owned stores in eight states: Arizona, Idaho, California, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, Utah and Washington, and employs more than 16,000 individuals.
