All Aboard the Krispy Kreme Cruiser

Last month in Daytona Beach, Fla., in the company of hundreds of fans and former NASCAR drivers Kyle, Richard and Austin Petty, Krispy Kreme unveiled the Krispy Kreme Cruiser -- the vehicle in which it’s embarking on the Glaze The Nation Tour in celebration of its 75th birthday.

Harking back to the years when Krispy Kreme would send out a small fleet of delivery trucks to deliver its iconic doughnuts, the cruiser is a newly restored 1960 Flxible Starliner that brand ambassadors will drive across the country to engage with fans.

“Because our purpose is to ‘touch and enhance lives through the joy that is Krispy Kreme,’ we felt it was important to get out of our shops and take the party on the road,” explained Dwayne Chambers, chief marketing officer for Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Krispy Kreme. “We searched the entire country to find a vehicle that had just the right balance of nostalgia, retro and cool. There were a lot of possibilities, but our search always seemed to come back to the Flxible.”

Restored by April and Kelvin Locklear, owners of Mooresville, N.C.-based Outcast Kustoms, and their team, and operated for Krispy Kreme by Welcome, N.C.-based Richard Childress Racing, the Krispy Kreme Cruiser will make almost 500 stops over the next few months at local fairs and festivals, Krispy Kreme shops, and a myriad of major events in 37 states, as well as spontaneous stops along the way complete with games, prizes and giveaways -- not to mention doughnuts.

As the vehicle is outfitted with a GeoNavigator, fans can track its whereabouts in real time, view pictures, videos and blogs, and interact with the Cruiser Tour Guides online.
