PG Honors 2010 Top Women, Green Grocers At Gala Event

An elegant D.C. hotel provided the perfect venue to fete the award winners.

The historic Willard InterContinental Hotel in Washington served as the ideal setting for Progressive Grocer to recognize and celebrate the 2010 Top Women in Grocery and Green Grocer award winners during the industry-leading publication's fourth annual Corporate Social Responsibility Awards gala event on Nov. 11, 2010.

Through the Top Women in Grocery awards program, PG has taken a leadership role in recognizing the critical role women play in the dynamic and vital food industry. Nearly 60 of PG's 2010 Top Women in Grocery winners were formally recognized during the event, which also celebrated the worthy recipients of the publication's 2010 Green Grocer awards, including representatives from Brookshire Grocery Co. and Giant Eagle, both of whom were in attendance.

Event emcees Steven Lichtenstein, VP/group publisher of PG's parent, Stagnito Media, and Meg Major, PG's editor-in-chief, were joined by a trio of special guest speakers who were also on hand for the awards dinner, sponsors of which were Anheuser-Busch, Kraft Foods, Oló Mexican Foods and Unilever: Ric Jurgens, chairman/CEO, Hy-Vee Inc.; Leslie G. Sarasin, president, the Food Marketing Instirute; and Keilly Witman of the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) LEED program.

During the event, PG also bestowed a special honor on The Kroger Co., which has been a strong and vigorous supporter of the Top Women in Grocery event ever since its inception, and whose pioneering commitment to women's issues is highly admirable. Denise Thomas, Kroger's director of supplier diversity, received PG's special recognition on behalf of the Cincinnati-based grocery chain while addressing the company's efforts on behalf of women- and community-based philanthropic causes.
