MOM’s Organic Market is now carrying a wide assortment of sustainable insect proteins at several of its stores, most recently at the grocer’s Ivy City location in Washington, D.C. On a trip to La Merced Market in Mexico, MOM's VP of Produce and Grocery Lisa de Lima and VP of Wellness Steve Geest sampled surprisingly tasty escamoles (ant larvae), and decided to include such items at their company.
The Ivy City store currently offers such items as cricket or mealworm Bolognese sauce; cricket cookies, snack bars and chips; whole flavored mealworms and crickets, available to purchase in bulk; and cricket or mealworm protein powder. Sustainable protein sections are already in place at MOM’s locations in Baltimore; Cherry Hill, N.J.; and White Marsh, Md.
“Not only are items containing insects incredibly nutritious, they can also have a positive impact on our global food supply,” noted de Lima. “Insects release fewer greenhouse gases than livestock, and require a lot less space and water to raise.”
All MOM's stores will hold a sustainable protein tasting on Saturday, Feb. 25, from 11 a.m.to 1 p.m. The Rockville, Md.-based chain operates a total of 17 stores in Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington, D.C.
