Stater Bros. Wins EPA GreenChill Award for Low Emissions

Stater Bros. Markets said Thursday it has received the Best Emissions Rate Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) GreenChill Partnership for having the lowest corporate-wide refrigerant emissions rate of all the GreenChill partners in 2013.

The company said it also received the award for 2012, and is the only Southern California grocer to have eight stores that have been EPA GreenChill certified at the Gold Level.  There are approximately 8,000 GreenChill partner stores throughout the nation.

“We are committed to protecting our environment for future generations to come, and we are especially pleased that the EPA has recognized our environmental awareness efforts towards protecting the atmosphere,” said Jack H. Brown, Stater Bros. chairman and CEO.

Stater Bros. has made additional sustainable strides through its energy reduction and recycling efforts. The company has replaced or retrofitted its refrigerated cases with new glass doors, reducing energy usage by 60 percent, and has implemented LED lighting and energy management systems that control refrigeration, HVAC, demand response and lighting.

San Bernardino, Calif.-based Stater Bros. operates 167 supermarkets, employing 18,000 associates.
